Painting "Trojos Saulė" by Deimantė Karaliūtė
In the painting "Trojan Sun" (Trojos Saulė), two historic symbols collide: the Trojan Horse and the guillotine. This unusual combination creates a visual tension between deception and justice, idealism and destruction. The horse, traditionally associated with victory through cunning, is here rendered condemned - frozen beneath the blade of the guillotine, it carries not triumph, but a prophecy of self-annihilation. The work draws on the paradox of the French Revolution, where the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity devolved into bloody terror. Between 1789 and 1794, the guillotine became a symbol not only of the revolution but of its own undoing. The populace, having overthrown the monarchy, soon found themselves victims of that very same instrument of justice. While the composition is rational and architecturally precise, it is thrown off balance by the eye-a gaze fixed upon the horse’s body. This is the third character, a silent witness, or perhaps even ourselves: watching, yet unable to stop the wheel of history as it turns once again. "Trojan Sun" speaks not of the past, but of eternal recurrence. It explores how ideology becomes ritual and how the light that promised truth turns into a blinding illusion-a solar brilliance under which we all eventually remain equally exposed.
