Sculpture "Faust" by Martynas Bernatonis

The work can be viewed from all sides. As it rotates, each person can see its transformation, different angles from their own point of view. The changing sides merge with each other, and both become parts of the same figure. Movement emphasizes the flow of time and the constant change of the individual. Geometrized forms, while rotating, catch the light, cast it, and force one to notice different details. The smooth, seamless rotation provides a visual pleasure. As it rotates, the work loses its dull static nature and becomes dynamic, interactive, making it difficult to look away, perhaps even reaching out to turn it again. With the help of rotation, the figure goes beyond the frame; its outstretched limbs seem to grasp everything the world offers, emphasizing the human's insatiable thirst for knowledge. This is why the title of the work is "Faust," taken from the philosophical tragedy "Faust" by the German mystic writer Wolfgang von Goethe, in which the author touches on the theme of becoming an individual. As it rotates, the work comes alive, sometimes seemingly defying gravity, spinning and flying above the ground.
