"Seagulls" by Kazimiera Zimblytė

Drawing "Seagulls" by Kazimiera Zimblytė, circa 1980. Graphite on paper. Measurements: artwork 14,5 x 18,5 cm / inner frame 23 x 28 cm / outer frame 29 x 36 cm Kazimiera Zimblytė (1933–1999) painter of pure abstraction, creator of collages, assemblages and installations today ranks among the most original voices of Lithuanian modernism. During the Soviet era, her steadfast commitment to abstraction marginalised her within the official art establishment. Yet this distance enabled her to keep a private, autonomous space for creative freedom and to remain faithful to her own visual thinking. Only posthumously has Zimblytė’s work begun to receive broader recognition. A significant retrospective at the National Gallery of Art in 2014 played an important role in re-evaluating her place in Lithuanian art history. In recent years, at least one of her works has entered the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris a sign of growing international interest and acknowledgement. The duo exhibition now on view at MO Museum till 2026 05 03 highlights Zimblytė’s early output from the 1960s her most intense period of exploration. It showcases the birth of her unique pictorial language, based on frontal plane, materiality and ornamental structure, deliberately rejecting illusionistic depth.
