During the Soviet era, her steadfast commitment to abstraction marginalised her within the official art establishment. Yet this distance enabled her to keep a private, autonomous space for creative freedom and to remain faithful to her own visual thinking. Only posthumously has Zimblytė’s work begun to receive broader recognition. A significant retrospective at the National Gallery of Art in 2014 played an important role in re-evaluating her place in Lithuanian art history. In recent years, at least one of her works has entered the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris — a sign of growing international interest and acknowledgement. The duo exhibition now on view at MO Museum till 2026 05 03 highlights Zimblytė’s early output from the 1960s — her most intense period of exploration. It showcases the birth of her unique pictorial language, based on frontal plane, materiality and ornamental structure, deliberately rejecting illusionistic depth.
